| | so I wanted to write a great entry about being in Shanghai, but alas, I know you readers have a very short attention span because hey, it is august, and I don't really feel like writing such an exhausting entry anyway, so I have compiled 2 lists of what I have discovered thus far in my (almost) 5 weeks in Shanghai, China....
shanghai is/has: -unbelievable traffic, i nearly get run over by a bike or car or motorcyle on a daily basis -has sooo much construction going on --it is a giant city in construction, getting ready for the olympics and world expo -beautiful at night with bright colored lights everywhere, especially the wai-tan -a night life completely comprised of foreigners, and so much to do -tons of macdonalds and KFCs and their whole menu is a dollar menu!!! (or $2, or $3 at most) -few good looking people -very young, shanghai doesn't have many historical sites, but it is amazing how much it is changing/will change by 2010 -an awesome metro system (the cleanest thing in shanghai)
Outside of Shanghai, I have been to Nanjing, Wuxi, Huangzhou, and Hainan dao where I have: -been attacked by a monkey with herpes on a monkey reserve island -visited beaches that boast the nickname "hawaii of china" -almost got beat up by hainan locals over a few pictures they forced us to buy -bathed in hot springs, some with flavors (coffee and mint were my favorites) -seen the tomb of dr. sun yat sen and a ming emperor -almost went to the nanjing massacre museum, but learned the whole history of the nanjing massacre anyway (look it up, hen you yisi =P) -been to every kind of factory china has to offer --silk, pearl, clay pot, tea manufacturing -tried several tea tastings and coffee tastings -had freshly squeezed watermelon juice and coconut juice -been bitten by a bazillion mosquitoes, despite wearing long pants most of the time on any given day I can be seen: -eating a mango popscicle -drinking coconut juice in my apartment (yes mari, i know, jealous jealous jealous haha) -singing along loudly to my ipod on the streets (nobody understands english anyway) -wiping my face with tissues in the middle of the afternoon and shaking my head at the dirt that sometimes wipes off -wandering around train stations looking for good bargains -in the ECNU foreigners dorm, where many students still probably think I'm part of the UC program (I'm actually part of a small independent study abroad program in shanghai, of which there are only 3 American students), using their internet and AC -hanging out with my teachers, pan lao shi and lu lao shi, the coolest tutors in shanghai, i kid you not!
and of course, pictures!
